Wow, the Dodgers were busy yesterday.

They traded two minor pitching prospects for Jimmy Rollins, then shipped Dee Gordon and Dan Haren to Miami for Andrew Heaney and stuff (the stuff looks pretty good), then they flipped Andrew Heaney for Howie Kendrick, and used the money freed up from Dan Haren to get Brandon McCarthy for 4/48.

Aside from that, I can't think of anything "special" that happened. Antonio Bastardo went to Pittsburgh for a nobody pitcher, but that's all that comes to mind immediately.
A couple reactions. First, from a baseball sense, the Dodgers got Howie Kendrick real cheap. Not sure what Halos were thinking.

From a sentimental perspective, goddamnit Phillies. The closest stadiums to me, overall and professional, are the Phillies and Phillies affiliates. I basically grew up with that team. Haven't missed a Cubs series at Citizen's Bank since 2008. Rollins was one of 6 guys with 10+ years of service for exclusively 1 team, and one of 3 Phillies. My first experience with baseball was watching him in his MVP year. I was in the ballpark when he got his hit to make him the Phillies record holder. He was a fine man and a great ball player, and in spite of being a Mets fan locally, I can't hate the Phillies. I can hate Washington and Miami and Atlanta, but the Phillies have meant too much to my baseball upbringing to warrant hate. J Roll was always rolling at the heart of it. He will be missed.

It's worth noting these are "random" draws, so they're guesses at best. Just seems like Real Madrid and Bayern get pretty easy draws in the Round of 16 while Barca and Chelsea usually get harder opponents.

Knockout round draw is on Monday. If I had to guess, the draw will look something like this:

Atletico Madrid v. Schalke 04

Real Madrid v. Shakhtar Donetsk

AS Monaco v. Bayer Leverkusen

Borussia Dortmund v. FC Basel

Bayern Munich v. Arsenal

Barcelona v. Manchester City

Chelsea v. Juventus

FC Porto v. PSG

Dodgers, Marlins Make a Seven-Player Trade: As noted above, the Dodgers and Marlins have announced a deal that sends middle infielder Dee Gordon, veteran right-hander Dan Haren, infielder Miguel Rojas and a player to be named later or cash to Miami in exchange for left-hander Andrew Heaney, second baseman Enrique Hernandez, righty reliever Chris Hatcher and catching prospect Austin Barnes.

Dodgers Add Kendrick: Anrew Heaney, acquired in the earlier in the trade with Miami has since been sent to the Angels for Howie Kendrick.

Padres To Acquire Matt Kemp: The Padres and Dodgers have agreed to terms on a deal involving Matt Kemp.  The deal will send Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz to San Diego, with the Dodgers receiving catcher Yasmani Grandal, righty Joe Wieland, and a third player, likely pitching prospect Zach Eflin. The Dodgers will also include $30 million to help cover the $107 million remaining on Kemp’s contract.

Astros add Luke Gregerson and Sign Pat Neshek: Shortly after signing Luke Gregerson to a three-year deal (Gregerson gets $6 million in 2015 followed by $6.25 million salaries in the next two years of the deal, which apparently includes incentives), the Astros have reached a deal with fellow right-handed reliever Pat Neshek, who receives a $12.5 million guarantee over two years, with an option for a third.  Neshek posted a 1.87 ERA with 9.1 K/9 against a paltry 1.2 BB/9 over 67 1/3 frames in St. Louis.

Pirates Acquire Antonio Bastardo:  The Pirates have acquired southpaw reliever Antonio Bastardo from the Phillies in exchange for minor league left-hander Joely Rodriguez.  Bastardo has a 3.36 ERA, 2.61 K/BB and an impressive 11.6 K/9 over 216 2/3 IP with Philadelphia since 2011.

As you know, I am a Newcastle United fan.  We did not have much to crow about at the beginning of the season but the club has turned it around and have moved steadily up the table, culminating in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at St. James last weekend.

Since Papiss Cisse returned from injury in October, Newcastle United have 5 wins 2 draws and 1 loss (17 points!). It was Chelsea's first loss of the year, and manager Jose Mourinho has still never masterminded a league win at St James' Park.

The Toon Army travel to Emerites Stadium this coming weekend.

Apparently the Dodgers and Padres agree on players involved in a Matt Kemp trade, but need permission from the Commissioner's Office due to the money involved. I haven't seen who, but all the rumors suggested it was for Yasmani Grandal plus.

Moral of the story: the Dodgers just got a lot better in the short and long term...which sucks.
